(Brampton) - Regional Council today approved the award of the Region's first Managed Competition contract. The winning bid, for sewer cleaning, was submitted by Region of Peel employees and amounts to a savings of $92,567 over three years. The savings were achieved through innovation and a re-engineering of the methods and procedures used for sewer cleaning.

"I'm tremendously pleased that our employees were able to secure the first bid," says Mitch Zamojc, Commissioner of Public Works at the Region of Peel. "This win demonstrates that we continuously search for efficiencies to provide the best services for our taxpayers at the best price."

Managed Competition is "a process where a public agency bids for the right to deliver a well-defined package of services over a specified period of time." In Public Works, this means that various functions performed by Public Works staff and contractors will be put through the Managed Competition process. Public Works staff have the opportunity to submit proposals and bids to perform the work, as do outside organizations. In addition, staff have the opportunity to bid on new work that the Region has an interest in performing, to provide better service to residents.

"Our Public Works department is committed to providing the highest quality services at a reasonable cost," says Zamojc. "We have worked hard to ensure a fair and equitable evaluation system for our Managed Competition bids, and this time our employee bid was successful."

The next Managed Competition activity will be a contract for roadside maintenance, which will close March 28, 2001.

"We strive to be leaders in the Public Works industry, and our Managed Competition process helps us achieve this goal," says Zamojc.
