(Brampton) - Regional Council has approved a June implementation for a phased-in three bag standard program in Peel. The new bag standard will be implemented in conjunction with the change to weekly collection of recycling, which will also become effective June, 2001.

"We're anticipating an increase in recycling due to the three bag standard, so we'd like to make recycling as convenient as possible for residents," says Mitch Zamojc, Commissioner of Public Works at the Region of Peel. "We're hoping that a return to weekly recycling collection together with a bag limit will encourage residents to maximize their recycling efforts."

With the bag limit program, residents will be encouraged to put no more than three bags or containers of waste out to the curb each week. A detailed implementation plan for the bag limit will be presented to Council at an upcoming meeting. This program, together with the weekly blue and grey box collection, will help residents direct more into recycling programs.

"Our residents are great recyclers, and their continued participation in our waste management programs is helping us move towards our goal of diverting 70 per cent of waste from landfill by the year 2016," says Zamojc. "In fact, due to their efforts, we're hoping to reach that goal between 2006 and 2008."
