Reminder to Residents that Three Bag Limit Begins in June

(Brampton) - The Region of Peel reminds residents that the three bag standard for waste collection begins Monday, June 4, 2001.

All Peel residents will receive a package in the mail at the beginning of June 2001, containing 36 free garbage tags, along with information about the new three bag standard and the switch to weekly recycling pick-up, which will coincide with the introduction of the three bag standard.

Residents can place three garbage bags or containers, without tags, to the curb per week (each weighing less than 23 kg or 50 lbs.). Any additional containers or bags will require a garbage tag. Additional tags can be picked up, free-of-charge, at various locations across the Region of Peel. For a detailed list of locations, please call the WASTELINE, 905-791-9499. To remind residents of the three bag standard, a "Just A Reminder" sticker will be left if any bags over the three bag limit are placed at the curb.

From February 2002 to August 2002, any bags over the three bag limit without tags will be left behind. During this period, tags will continue to be available free-of-charge.

Starting September 2002, a nominal cost will be applied to the garbage tags, and any bags or containers in excess of three will continue to be left behind.

The Region will offer three "Amnesty Weeks" a year, during which residents can place unlimited bags or containers to the curb. These are the first week of January, the week after Victoria Day in May, and the week after Labour Day.

"The continued efforts of Peel residents to divert waste material from landfills has not gone unnoticed," said Zamojc. "The new three bag standard is another initiative to help the Region increase waste diversion from landfill sites in Peel."

The three bag standard will not apply to large appliances, bulky items, yard waste or recycling. There are no limits to the amount of recyclable material and yard waste that can be put out to the curb.
