Influenza Season is Here, Time to Get Your Flu Shot

(Brampton) - Influenza A cases have been confirmed in eastern Ontario, but there is still time to "beat the flu" in the Region of Peel. While there are no confirmed cases of influenza in Peel yet, people should get their flu shot, advises Peel Health.

"We want to remind people that it's important for everyone, even for healthy people, to get a flu shot," says Dr. David McKeown, the Region of Peel's Medical Officer of Health. "Getting vaccinated is the only proven effective method of protecting yourself and your family from the influenza-related illness."

Dr. David McKeown, the Region of Peel's Medical Officer of Health, is smiling while Public Health Nurse Jayne Cruise from Assure Health is giving him a flu shot at one of the clinics for the Regional employees.

The influenza vaccine is available from your family doctor, from various workplaces and from Peel Health at local community clinics. Peel Health is offering free flu clinics for the general public from November 9 until December 6. A complete list of these clinics is available on the Regional Web site at and will also be advertised in local newspapers.

For the second year in a row, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) is committed to providing free flu shots to all individuals over the age of six months in Ontario. Previously, only those at high-risk, including seniors and people with health conditions, were vaccinated for free. Ontario is the only jurisdiction in North America to offer this program.
