Region of Peel Recognizes Community Involvement in Making Environment Days a Success

(Brampton) - Today, the Region of Peel presented awards of appreciation to four community partners who hosted special Public Works Environment Day events in 2001. Regional Chair Emil Kolb and Public Works Vice-Chair Maja Prentice presented the plaques of appreciation in Council Chambers during today's session of Regional Council this morning.

"The success of the Region's Environment Day events is entirely dependent on community involvement," said Regional Chair Emil Kolb. "With the generous support of our community partners, who provide us with venues to hold our off-site events, we are able to bring our recycling services right into the community at convenient one-stop locations."

"We're trying to make recycling a way of life for residents throughout the Region," said Maja Prentice, Councillor and Vice-Chair of Public Works. "Peel's goal is to divert 70 per cent of waste from landfill by 2016. By offering convenient and accessible community recycling services, as well as other waste management initiatives, such as backyard composting, yard waste collection and the Three Bag Standard program, we are well on our way to achieving our goal."

Receiving plaques of appreciation today were representatives from Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School, Brampton Centre for Sports and Entertainment, Xerox Research Centre of Canada and Communication Repair Logistics.

This year, more than 7,500 residents participated in the four special one-day events held in Mississauga and Brampton. Another 11,650 residents participated in the Environment Day events held at the Region's permanent recycling facilities.
