Buckle Me Safe Day

(Brampton) - On Saturday, October 13, 2001, the Peel Car Seat Safety Committee will celebrate "Buckle Me Safe Day" with a FREE Child Car Seat Clinic at Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga. The clinic will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Similar Car Seat Clinics across Peel Region earlier this year have been extremely popular, with some parents waiting for as long as one hour to have their car seat checked. To reduce waiting time, parents and caregivers of young children can call Health Line Peel at 905-799-7700 to book an appointment time. Drop-ins are also welcome.

During the Clinic, trained inspectors will be on hand to check car seat installations and provide car seat safety education to parents and caregivers of young children. Participants must bring their child, the car seat manufacturer's instructions and the owner's manual for their vehicle. Each safety assessment should take approximately 20 minutes.

"Buckle Me Safe Day" is the official launch of the new Peel Regional Police Please Be Seated car seat enforcement program. During the weeks of October 15 and 22, Peel Regional Police officers will be conducting a car seat safety blitz on the streets of Mississauga.

During the Please Be Seated safety blitz, officers will be looking for proper installation of child car seats. If your child car seat is improperly installed, you will receive a $110 ticket and lose two demerit points. During this safety blitz, the tickets will not be processed if you agree to attend a free car seat education session, conducted by the Peel Car Seat Safety Committee.

Correctly used child restraints reduce the likelihood of child injury or death during a motor vehicle collision by 75 per cent. In Canada, four out of every five children are not properly restrained in their car seats. Common car seat installation mistakes include improper use of the tether strap, failure to use locking clips on seat belts and improper tightening of seat belts.

Square One Shopping Centre is located at Highway 403 and Hurontario Street in Mississauga. For more information on the Child Car Seat Clinic or to make an appointment, call Health Line Peel at 905-799-7700.

The Peel Car Safety Committee is a cooperative venture of the Peel Regional Police, the Ontario Provincial Police, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, St. John's Ambulance, Co-operator's Insurance Group, the Peel Health Department and Peel Fire and Emergency Services.
