Region of Peel Celebrates Waste Reduction Week
(Brampton) - Along with municipalities, businesses, schools and media outlets across Canada, the Region of Peel will celebrate Waste Reduction Week from Oct. 15 to Oct. 21, 2001. This year's theme is Too Good To Waste! A variety of activities are planned to show residents across the Region what they can do to reduce the waste they generate and conserve precious resources.
As in previous years, students at Regional schools have been invited to create artwork from recycled materials. During Waste Reduction Week, the recycled artwork will be displayed at various locations in Mississauga including the Cawthra Community Centre at 1399 Cawthra Rd. and the Erin Meadows Community Centre at 2800 Erin Centre Blvd.
In addition to the artwork exhibits, the Region of Peel's Web site will feature a daily quiz. Residents with access to the Internet are encouraged to participate in the quiz and be eligible to win prizes daily. Visitors to the Region's Web site will also be able to make a Personal Action Pledge and commit to reducing or eliminating as much waste as possible in their day-to-day activities.
Throughout the week, a display located in the lobby of the Region of Peel's headquarters in Brampton at 10 Peel Centre Drive will feature a recycled artwork exhibit, as well as information on a variety of Regional Waste Management programs and recycling services to assist residents in their recycling efforts.
"We encourage all Peel residents to practice reducing, reusing and recycling not only this week, but every week throughout the year," says Nathalie Henning, Acting Manager of Waste Program Planning. "The best alternatives to managing waste are to reduce the amount of waste we generate, to reuse or donate items for reuse whenever possible and to make recycling a way of life."
