(Brampton) - The Region of Peel Planning department has received an Award of Excellence from Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) Canada for the Regional Planning Atlas. The award was presented today by ESRI Canada President Alex Miller during the General Committee of Regional Council.

The ESRI Canada Award of Excellence recognizes leadership and innovative use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

"We are extremely pleased that the Regional Planning Atlas has received national recognition," says Ron Jaros, Acting Director of Planning Policy and Research for the Region of Peel. "Just as the Atlas commemorates the first 25 years of Regional planning, this award is a tribute to those who have worked tirelessly to develop the Atlas."

The Atlas is a practical tool for teaching geography and GIS to Peel students in grades 7 and 8. It provides a geographic perspective of Regional history, and offers interesting examples of potential uses of the spatial data, mapping and GIS tools.

The Regional Planning Atlas was first launched in December 2000. Since then, more than 800 copies have been donated to public, separate and private schools in Peel Region that offer
Grades 7 and 8 geography classes.
