Child Care Management Plan Identifies Strategies to Improve Current Child Care Service Gaps
(Brampton) -- While families living in Peel Region are fortunate to have a wide variety of quality child care services available to them, the results of a recent consultative study show that the demand for child care service, is greater than the current supply of services.
"When the province transferred responsibilities for the child care service system management to municipalities, we were required to develop a local child care plan to identify current service and service gaps in child care, special needs resourcing and family resource centres" said David Szwarc, Interim Commissioner of Social Services.
Through the process of developing the Region of Peel's Child Care Service Management Plan several issues were identified in the community as 'gaps' in child care services in Peel.
"Community consultations and surveys reviewed such things as current demographics, funding, service levels, growth demands and unmet needs," said Lorna Reid, Director of Children's Services. "The results were developed into strategies aimed at narrowing those identified service gaps in Peel."
Strategies presented in the Child Care Service Management Plan include:
- Increasing the ease of access to services for families of children with special needs;
- Increasing access to family resource programs for those living in rural areas;
- Increasing the amount of fee subsidy available to parents;
- Increasing opportunities for non-English speaking families to access and use resource materials;
- Encouraging the province to develop a solution to the inequities in its current wage subsidy system.
"Some of the strategies identified will result in an increase in service over the next three years in Peel," said Reid. "Children's Services is fully committed to ensuring accessible, high quality services for children and families in Peel Region within the resources available."
