Region of Peel Brings Community Leaders Together To Take Action On Issues

(Brampton) - On October 31 to November 2, the Region of Peel is hosting, "Housing the Community…Building a Healthy Future Now," a workshop that brings together key community stakeholders to develop strategies that address issues affecting many of Peel's residents such as the lack of affordable housing and community supports.

"This workshop provides an opportunity for key stakeholders to take action on some issues compromising Peel's vitality," said Keith Ward, Commissioner of Housing and Property for the Region. "Housing, quality of life and economic stability were identified by workshop planning members as key focuses for discussion."

Ward, who is also General Manager of Peel Living, the Region's non-profit housing corporation, heads up one of three Regional departments that spearheaded the think-tank. Social Services and Peel Health are also partners. Representatives from a number of community agencies were also part of the planning group. Housing providers, economic developers, health and social services organizations, social advocacy groups and provincial and federal government representatives make up the list of participants who will use their collective wisdom to take action on the issues many Peel residents face.

"The purpose of this endeavor is to bring a diverse group of people, their insights, experience and energy to describe major trends in the Region and begin the process of creatively addressing them," said Robert Yamashita, Manager of Homeless and Housing Initiatives for the Region. "It's a rare event, for example, when community members can share with principal planners different views of the same issue, draw conclusions and collaboratively design solutions."

The three-day workshop is being held at the Peel Police Association Building in Mississauga.
