Mississauga Environment Day a Blistering Success

(Brampton) - Despite the hot, humid weather on Saturday, Sept. 8, nearly 2,000 vehicles rolled through the Region of Peel's fall Environment Day event at the Xerox Research Centre at 2660 Speakman Dr. (Winston Churchill and QEW area).

"The extremely high temperature did not keep residents from attending our first fall Environment Day event this year," said Ben Shepherd, Manager of Waste Collection and Processing. "We collected everything from kitchen sinks to computer video game players, aluminum eavestroughs and used tires."

In addition to collecting household hazardous waste, reusable goods and recyclable materials, the Region sold 75 backyard composters and distributed close to 1,500 Blue and Grey recycling boxes at the Speakman Drive event.

All recycling facilities, including the Britannia Public Waste and Recycling Depot, the Brampton Recycling Depot, the Bolton Community Recycling Centre and the Caledon Public Waste and Recycling Depot, accepted recyclable materials, yard waste and household hazardous waste free of charge at their own Environment Day events on the same date.

In exchange for food donations for a local food bank, the Region gave residents two free bags of compost. At the end of the day, more than 1.5 tonnes of non-perishable food items was collected at all Regional recycling facilities and the Mississauga one-day event.

"We're thrilled with the turnout at our recycling facilities across the Region," said Shepherd. "Peel residents are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of recycling to the community and the environment. We're pleased to be providing our services at convenient one-stop locations."

Residents will have another chance to drop off their reusable goods, household hazardous waste and recyclable materials at a second Environment Day event on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2390 Argentia Rd. (Erin Mills/Derry Road area).

Once again, all Regional recycling depots will participate on the same day with their own Environment Day events.
