Leading Installation Artist "Eyes Up" Peel Heritage Complex

BRAMPTON, ON. (Oct. 27, 2009) – One of Canada’s leading installation artists, Wyn Geleynse, has eyed up the Peel Heritage Complex (PHC) as the perfect site for an exclusive art projection in the heart of Brampton. Geleynse’s Day In And Day Out With Minor Tragedies is the latest exhibition taking place at the PHC from Nov. 2, 2009 to Jan. 3, 2010.

“When 5 Wellington Street’s impending vacancy was announced a few years ago, it presented a unique opportunity for Wyn to create a public projection – it’s our own mini-version of Nuit Blanche-style art,” says Judy Daley, Acting Curator, Peel Heritage Complex, alluding to Toronto’s recent midnight exhibition of contemporary art. “We are thrilled to feature this dramatic artistic projection on the building that will soon house the new Art Gallery of Peel.”

Wyn Geleynse has been exploring photography as a self-referential medium for the last three decades. His latest installation consists of two moving images of eyes on the building’s upper windows. The looped segments were filmed independently and the eyes reversed from their natural placement on the face, resulting in an unsettling dislocation. Wyn Geleynse

“Whatever its form, public art attracts attention, and by its presence alone, it can heighten our awareness, question our assumptions and transform a landscape,” comments Wyn.

Additional innovative work by Wyn will be on display at the PHC’s Art Gallery of Peel during the exhibition. The artist himself will also be at the opening reception on Nov. 5 from 7 - 9 p.m. at the PHC.

Projections on the exterior facades of public buildings have gained recent attention with installations like Doug Aitken’s Sleepwalkers (2007) commissioned by New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Creative Time, a New York-based public art organization.

For a complete list of exhibitions and events at the PHC, visit www.peelheritagecomplex.org or call 905-791-4055 for more information.

The PHC consists of the Region of Peel Museum, the Art Gallery of Peel and the Region of Peel Archives. Together they collect, preserve and display a variety of materials related to Peel’s heritage.

The PHC is operated by the Region of Peel and is located at 9 Wellington St., E. in Brampton. The PHC is open to the public Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; weekends from noon to 4:30 p.m., and Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission fees are $2.50 for adults; $1.50 for seniors; $1 for students and $7 for families.
