(Brampton) - Following a full day of presentations by community members during
last Thursday's Council meeting, Regional Council has referred the debate and
decision on the draft Regional Smoke-Free By-law to a special council meeting
on May 22, 2003.
Under the proposed draft by-law:
all bars, taverns, entertainment lounges, billiard halls and night clubs
would become 100 per cent smoke-free by June 1, 2004. Those establishments
with a separately-ventilated designated smoking room (DSR) would be able to
operate their DSR until June, 2008, provided they are built and operational
by December, 2003.
all bingo halls and casinos would become 100 per cent smoke-free by June
1, 2004. Those bingos and casinos with a separately-ventilated designated
smoking room would be able to operate their DSR until June, 2008, provided
they are built and operational by June, 2004.
no workplaces in Peel shall be allowed a DSR, except:
- Separately-ventilated designated smoking rooms (DSRs) shall be permitted
where the workplace is engaged in the manufacture of motor vehicles and
the workplace comprises a minimum of 500,000 square feet and has a ceiling
height of 30 feet until December 2008, provided they are built by June,
2004.
- Separately-ventilated designated smoking rooms (DSRs) shall be permitted
where a workplace is engaged in the manufacture and sale of tobacco products
until June 2008, provided they are used solely for the purpose of testing
tobacco products and provided no employee is required to enter the DSR.
