(Brampton) – At a recent Youth Tobacco Conference hosted by the Region of Peel, youth leaders took to the stage to raise awareness among their peers about the marketing tactics of the tobacco industry and the health effects of tobacco use. The event, which attracted close to 100 participants, was organized by extinguish, a youth-led anti-tobacco group.
“It’s important to use a peer-to-peer model in youth tobacco initiatives, because for too long, students have had trouble relating to speakers who are very different from themselves,” says Vaibhav Gupta, a peer leader with extinguish. “We find that youth we speak with are more receptive to our content, because we’re one of them.”
The conference featured a presentation by motivational speaker Andy Thibodeau, who encouraged participants to have a positive influence in their peer groups and communities through leadership. The presentation was followed by workshops that were designed and led by extinguish peer leaders. Topics covered global perspectives on tobacco, smokers’ views, the glamorization of tobacco in the media and how to take action.
extinguish reaches out to the community to discourage tobacco use by organizing educational events, delivering presentations, developing resources and encouraging youth involvement in Peel.
