Peel Regional Chair Welcomes Provincial Direction to Upload Human Service Costs
BRAMPTON, ON. (October 31, 2008) Ė Emil Kolb, Chairman of the Region of Peel, issued a statement to the media regarding todayís announcement by the Province on the Provincial-Municipal Fiscal and Service Delivery Review.
Confirming the Regionís positive reaction to the report, Chairman Kolb stated, "We welcome the announcement by the Province to gradually upload the costs of human services over a ten-year period. The Fiscal Review clarified that regional governments will be responsible for the delivery of social housing, land ambulance services and a range of health and human services."
The Province plans to commence uploading the municipal costs of Ontario Works benefits (income and employment assistance) in 2010 with an initial three per cent. Based on the announcement made today, this means that Peel will not experience any budget relief in 2009; in 2010 the savings will equal approximately $600,000.
"We are genuinely pleased with the willingness of the Province to continue to work collaboratively with the municipalities. We look forward to reviewing the report in greater detail in order to assess its impacts and have a fulsome discussion with Regional Council."
The Regional Municipality of Peel was incorporated in 1974 on the principle that certain community and infrastructure services are most cost-effectively administered over a larger geographic area. The Region of Peel serves more than one million residents in the Cities of Brampton and Mississauga and the Town of Caledon.
