Region Employee Receives International Award

Harlequin Enterprises recognizes Inside the Dream a program focused on Peel youth

BRAMPTON, ON. (June 19, 2008) – Ruth Renwick, a caseworker with the Ontario Works Outreach team in Peel Region was recognized today by Peel Regional Council and Harlequin Enterprises Ltd. for establishing a program that provides young women and men with formal attire and accessories for their graduation night.

Ruth Renwick is one of two Canadians to receive the 2007 Harlequin More Than Words award for improving the quality of life in her community. In 2003, Ruth created Inside the Dream, a non-profit organization focused on youth in grades eight and 12. This year the organization helped more than 240 students find their perfect party attire for graduation night through community donations.

“Not only does she work tirelessly as a caseworker here in Peel, but her passion for helping others and making a difference to the lives of young people is exemplified through Inside the Dream,” said Keith Ward, Commissioner of Human Services.

“Ruth is helping to build precious memories for young people who would otherwise be deprived of a pleasure others take for granted,” said Tracey Langmuir, Community Investment Manager for Harlequin Enterprises Ltd.

At the heart of More Than Words, Harlequin’s philanthropic program, is the annual anthology of short stories written by Harlequin’s top authors and inspired by the work of the women honoured. New York Times bestselling author Sherryl Woods wrote “Black Tie and Promises,” a story that captures the magic of pretty dresses and first dances and pays tribute to Ruth. The story is included in this year’s collection, More Than Words Volume 4.

Along with the anthology Harlequin made a donation to Inside the Dream, which allowed the organization to create scholarships for students in Peel. Last year, Inside the Dream was able to give seven deserving students a scholarship to help out with school expenses.

“It’s about making dreams come true and we have to remember that kids have dreams too,” said Ruth Renwick, founder of Inside the Dream.

The Department’s divisions include Ontario Works, Children’s Services, Early Years Integration, Social Housing (Peel Living), and Social Housing Policy and Programs.

The Regional Municipality of Peel was incorporated in 1974 on the principle that certain community and infrastructure services are most cost-effectively administered over a larger geographic area. The Region of Peel serves more than one million residents in the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton and the Town of Caledon.
