The Region of Peel’s Inaugural Run, Walk and Roll 5k
for the United Way a Huge Success

BRAMPTON, ON. (Nov. 1, 2010) – The Region of Peel’s 2010 United Way Employee Campaign’s inaugural Run, Walk and Roll 5K and 1K Kid’s Course, held on Saturday, Oct. 30, was a resounding success.  Presented by Walk+Roll Peel, the event raised over $30,000 enabling the 2010 Employee Campaign to reach its fundraising target of $325,000.

Over 350 participants attended the event along with many children who took part in the 1K Kid’s Course. Guest speakers included Regional representatives, Dan Labrecque, Commissioner of Public Works and Janet Menard, Commissioner of Human Services, as well as Shelley White, CEO of the United Way of Peel Region. Their remarks focused on the importance of giving and the role Peel staff and residents can play in strengthening their community.

Regional service providers, including Peel Paramedics, Peel Regional Police, the Regional Community Outreach and Learning in our Neighbourhood programs were on hand to provide information about their services. In addition, non-perishable food donations were collected by Peel Police representatives to benefit local food banks.

We are thrilled with the results and the tremendous level of support from all who made today possible,” says Karen MacGougan. “The theme for our event is ‘Come Together’ and today we truly saw this core value in action.”

The Run, Walk and Roll 5K for the United Way is a family-oriented, wheelchair accessible event open to everyone.  The event route began and ended at 10 Peel Centre Dr. in Brampton and traveled along Queen Street, which was closed for the duration of the event.

“Today was an inclusive, fun-filled event that brought together people from all walks of life with one purpose – to support the United Way of Peel Region,” says Joanne Pattison. “Together, we’ve raised funds that will strengthen our community and we thank everyone involved.”

The Regional Municipality of Peel was incorporated in 1974 on the principle that certain community and infrastructure services are most cost-effectively administered over a larger geographic area. The Region of Peel serves more than one million residents in the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton and the Town of Caledon.
