Long Weekend Partying Calls for Responsible Hosts

BRAMPTON, ON. (May 17, 2010) – Before offering alcohol – think about their safety. Be a responsible host this May long weekend and help keep your family and friends safe if you plan to serve alcohol. The May “two-four” weekend is a seasonal milestone that signals we have braved another Canadian winter and kicks off a season of backyard barbecues and summer parties.

“Make sure you monitor how much alcohol is being served and consumed at your party,” says Elizabeth Amorim, Supervisor of the Alcohol, Drugs and Addiction Team at the Region of Peel. “Plan ahead for guests to take a cab or sleep over – this not only reduces the risk of injury, but also reduces your risk of being sued for any injuries or damage caused by intoxicated guests, including those that come from drinking and driving.”

Here are a few tips to help you plan a great party while preventing alcohol-related incidents:

  • Tell your guests you have a “no drinking and driving rule” as soon as they arrive. Give alternate options for getting home, such as calling a cab, taking public transit or staying over.
  • Provide non-alcoholic drink options.
  • Serve high starch, high protein foods. Do not serve greasy, salty snacks because they encourage people to drink more.
  • Don’t plan any physical activities for your party; it increases the risk of injury.

Keep your family and friends safe this summer by planning ahead and being a responsible host. For more information, visit www.ResponsibleHost.ca or call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700.

The Regional Municipality of Peel was incorporated in 1974 on the principle that certain community and infrastructure services are most cost-effectively administered over a larger geographic area. The Region of Peel serves more than one million residents in the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton and the Town of Caledon.
