September is Literacy Month in Peel

BRAMPTON, ON. (Sept 7, 2010) – Research shows that Canada's literacy rate is below world standards. The Canadian Council on Learning reports that almost half of all Canadian adults (48 per cent) have low literacy skills. To help bolster awareness around the importance of literacy, Regional Council proclaimed September as Literacy Month in Peel. Human Services staff have partnered with community agencies across Peel to hold a number of free events and activities for individuals, children and parents to promote literacy in Peel.

Children's Services offers free Family Literacy Workshops for children aged zero to six years of age, held at various elementary schools and other locations across Peel. The program is a series of nine workshops that give parents the skills to help their child learn early reading and writing skills. Parents who have attended these workshops in the past have reported reading to their children more often and have increased the amount of educational activities they participate in with their child.

A variety of special events are being held during the month of September, such as adult literacy workshops, story time for children, a community book swap, youth writer’s club and language-specific reading times across Peel. To view the September calendar of events or to register for the family literacy workshops, visit www.peelregion.ca or call 905-791-2585 ext. 7227.

The Regional Municipality of Peel was incorporated in 1974 on the principle that certain community and infrastructure services are most cost-effectively administered over a larger geographic area. The Region of Peel serves more than one million residents in the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton and the Town of Caledon. For more information on the Region of Peel, please call 905-791-7800 or visit www.peelregion.ca.
