Flu Clinics: Your Best Shot to Stay Healthy

BRAMPTON, ON. (Oct. 26, 2010) – With the flu season at hand, Peel Public Health staff is ready to roll up some sleeves and increase residents’ resistance to the influenza virus. Peel has already distributed vaccines to family doctors and will begin offering community clinics across Peel on October 28. The complete schedule of clinics is available online at peelregion.ca/flu and in local newspaper ads.

“While we’re no longer experiencing the H1N1 pandemic this year, the flu is still a serious respiratory infection and it’s important to protect yourself by getting the influenza vaccine,” says Dr. Kathleen Dooling, Associate Medical Officer of Health for the Region of Peel.

Dr. Dooling adds that this year the vaccine will protect against three strains of the flu, including H1N1. “Even if you got the H1N1 shot last year it is important to get the shot this year,” advises Dr. Dooling.

Peel Public Health reminds residents to protect themselves and others from getting the flu by practising these basic measures:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand cleaner, especially after you cough or sneeze.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after use.
  • Stay home from work or school and limit contact with others if you get sick.
  • Get your flu vaccine.

Flu vaccine is free for Ontario residents and recommended for everyone over the age of 6 months.
