BRAMPTON, ON. (Oct. 27, 2010) – The Region of Peel is advising residents that election signs from the Oct. 25 municipal election can be recycled at any Community Recycling Centre (CRC), free of charge.
Residents may drop off the three main types of signs – corrugated plastic, paperboard and plastic film. These signs can be recycled for free at CRCs as long as their associated hardware (e.g. metal and wooden stakes and staples) is removed. These signs are not accepted in curbside or apartment recycling containers.
It is the responsibility of a candidate’s campaign office to remove all signs by the following times:
- In Brampton signs must be removed by 8 p.m. on Oct. 27
- In Mississauga signs must be removed by 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 27
- In Caledon signs must be removed by 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 1
Residents may also remove signs from their properties and bring them to a CRC.
Residents dropping off election signs at CRCs must keep them separate from chargeable items in order for them to be accepted at no charge. Dedicated loads of the following items are also accepted for free at CRCs:
- Household hazardous waste
- Reusable goods
- Blue box materials
- Large metal appliances and fixtures
- Select electronics
- Tires (passenger or light truck)
Vehicles and/or trailers containing only items accepted free of charge are considered to have dedicated loads. Vehicles and/or trailers with both items accepted for free and items subject to drop-off fees are considered to have mixed loads. The entire weight of a mixed load is subject to drop-off fees.
There is a $2 flat rate for loads up to and including 25 kg (55 lbs.). Loads greater than 25 kg (55 lbs.) are charged
8¢ per kilogram.
CRC locations and a complete list of accepted items can be found at www.peelregion.ca/waste and in the 2010/2011 Waste Management Guide.
