Have a Parenting or Pregnancy Question? Ask a Nurse on Facebook

BRAMPTON, ON. (Feb. 8, 2012) - Peel parents and parents-to-be can now interact with Public Health Nurses on Facebook. The Parenting In Peel Facebook page is a fun, social and convenient way for users to get answers to their pregnancy, parenting and breastfeeding questions.

“Parents are using Facebook to share their pregnancy and parenting experiences with friends and family,” says Debbie Chang, Manager, Child Health at Peel Public Health. “The Parenting In Peel page gives these socially connected parents access to information they need, when they need it. They can post a question on the wall and it will be answered by a qualified nurse, all from the comfort of their computer.”

The page has grown rapidly and currently has a community of over 1,100 fans. “It is reassuring to read that another mom may be experiencing the same issues with her baby,” says mom and page participant Margo Reindler. “I think of Parenting In Peel as a virtual village of people who are helping me do the best job I can for my baby.”

A 2010 survey of over 850 Peel parents revealed that 74 per cent used the internet to get health information on pregnancy, breastfeeding and parenting. Eighty-one percent of survey respondents said they used social media. Over 16.7 million Canadians are currently using Facebook, according to InsideFacebook.com.

“With so much information online and in social media, it can be hard to know what is credible,” says Chang. “The information on the Parenting In Peel Facebook page and on ParentingInPeel.ca comes directly from medical and public health professionals, so parents know they’re getting the best advice for their family.”

Parents can also reach a nurse by calling 905-799-7700 in Mississauga and Brampton or 905-584-2216 in Caledon.

The Regional Municipality of Peel was incorporated in 1974 on the principle that certain community and infrastructure services are most cost-effectively administered over a larger geographic area. The Region of Peel serves more than one million residents in the cities of Brampton and Mississauga, and the town of Caledon.
