Tips to Manage Your Community Recycling Centre Materials

BRAMPTON, ON. (June 5, 2012) – The labour dispute involving Public Works employees represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 966 has resulted in significant delays at Peel’s Community Recycling Centres (CRCs). The Battleford and Caledon CRCs are closed. Bolton, Brampton and Fewster CRCs remain open.

“We regret that residents have been inconvenienced at the CRC sites due to the labour disruption” said Steve Davis, Acting Director, Human Resources.  “We ask residents for their patience during this difficult time and suggest that they consider alternatives to their usual practice of visiting the CRCs. We are currently in negotiations with CUPE regarding picket protocols for Public Works facilities and hope that once these are established we can expect better on-site relationships. Picketers do have a legal right to picket and we encourage residents, staff and picketers to be respectful of one another.”

Peel Region’s Waste Management Division suggests residents consider a staged approach to managing materials that they would typically drop off at the CRCs.

Step 1: HOLD on to your material

  • if it is not odorous such as yard waste; practice grasscycling and backyard composting

Step 2: DONATE it

  • to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity if the item is functional and reusable including building material

Step 3: TAKE it

  • to retail organizations for paints, automotive materials such as anti-freeze, oil containers, pharmaceutical and sharps
  • to scrap metal recyclers (search Canada411.ca)
  • to Habitat Restores in Brampton and Mississauga
  • visit makethedrop.ca for locations

Step 4: PLAN your CRC visit
