Upcoming Waste Management Services in Peel: Excess Waste Pick Up and Christmas Tree Collection

BRAMPTON, ON (Dec. 18, 2015) – The Region of Peel is offering residents excess waste collection for a two-week period from Monday, Dec. 21, 2015 - Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016.  During this time, residents may place unlimited quantities of acceptable garbage at the curb on their scheduled waste collection day. No garbage tags will be required for this period only. Regular drop off fees still apply at all Community Recycling Centres.

"Excess waste collection is an opportunity to get rid of household garbage that remains after residents have reused items or recycled acceptable materials," remarks Norm Lee, Director, Waste Management. "This year’s excess waste collection is well-timed for residents as they prepare for the start of bi-weekly, cart-based collection in January."

Bi-weekly, cart-based collection begins the first week of January 2016, which means garbage and organics will be collected one week and recycling and organics will be picked up the next.  Residents are urged to visit peelregion.ca/waste to find out if their collection day has changed and to view their 2016 collection schedule.

"The Region is offering Christmas tree pick up from Monday, Jan. 11 – Friday, Jan. 22," adds Lee.  "It is important residents determine their collection schedule because Christmas trees will only be picked at the curb on residents’ scheduled recycling week."

When residents set Christmas trees at the curb they must:

  • Remove the tree stand and all tinsel;
  • Ensure all ornaments have been taken off the tree;
  • Take off any plastic wrapping or bags; and,
  • Keep trees away from snowbanks as they will not be picked up if they are buried in snow.

Artificial trees or trees with fake snow (flocked) will not be accepted as part of the Christmas tree collection; however, they can be picked up as a bulky item on residents’ garbage collection week.  To learn more about bulky items visit peelregion.ca/waste

The Region of Peel provides waste management services in the Cities of Brampton and Mississauga and in the Town of Caledon. Visit peelregion.ca/waste for more information.
