paramedics

BRAMPTON, ON. (June 18, 2015) - Bal Gosal, MP for Bramalea - Gore - Malton, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, with Raymond Louie, President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), and Acting Mayor of the City of Vancouver, BC, today announced a Green Municipal FundTM (GMF) grant of $131,150 to the Region of Peel. The Region will use the funding towards a study to evaluate ways to divert more compostable materials from household waste streams.

"Our Government is helping municipalities across the country to achieve their goal of a cleaner and healthier environment for their citizens through the Green Municipal Fund," said Mr. Gosal. "Today’s announcement is another example of how our government - in partnership with the FCM - is helping communities like Peel Region build a greener future for our citizens."

"The Green Municipal Fund offers a range of resources and services that specifically addresses the sustainable community development needs of municipal governments," said Mr. Louie. "The financing and knowledge provided by the Fund supports the development of communities that are more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable."

The study will test-market compost made from Peel residents’ organics bins as an alternative or supplement to traditional fertilizers at 14 Ontario farms. The study will monitor changes in soil chemistry and crop productivity and will evaluate environmental, social and economic impacts.  "Receiving the GMF grant gives us an opportunity to document the long-term effects and benefits of compost use in an agricultural setting," said Larry Conrad, Manager, Waste Operations, Region of Peel.  "A successful result will help municipalities and compost producers find more markets for their compost and assist farmers with soil health, boosting crop production."

The Government of Canada endowed the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) with $550 million to establish the Green Municipal Fund‘. The Fund supports partnerships and leveraging of both public and private-sector funding to reach higher standards of air, water and soil quality, and climate protection.

FCM has been the national voice of municipal governments since 1901. It fosters the development of sustainable communities to improve quality of life by promoting strong, effective, and accountable municipal government.
