2018 Child Care Costs Reduced for Families in Peel

BRAMPTON, ON. (August 22, 2018) – In partnership with the Government of Ontario, Ministry of Education, the Region of Peel is making child care more affordable for families. Peel is providing funding to eligible licensed child care providers which will reduce 2018 child care fees for families by an average of $12 per day for full-day care and $6 per day for part-day care for approximately 12,100 children in licensed care.

Affordability of child care is a significant concern for families in Peel. According to a report presented to Peel Regional Council in April this year, research suggests that, for child care to be considered affordable, families in Peel should spend no more than 11 per cent of their net household income on child care. Currently, a family in Peel with two young children spends almost 35 per cent of their net income on child care.

“This is an exciting opportunity for families in Peel as it is the first-time child care rates have been decreased system wide,” said Suzanne Finn, Director Early Years and Child Care Services, Region of Peel. “It is part of our continued commitment to target affordability needs for all families in Peel."

Peel is currently examining child care affordability as part of the broad-based engagement with parents, caregivers, service providers and community partners in preparation for the Early Years and Child Care Program and Services Plan, due to be released in 2019.

This affordability initiative is made possible through funding received by the Government of Ontario, Ministry of Education, as part of their continuing commitment to make child care more affordable for Ontario families.

This reduction is available for families with children from birth to age four (infants, toddlers and preschoolers not eligible to attend kindergarten) attending licensed child care centres in Peel. Families are encouraged to contact their licensed child care provider for more details.
