Study area

The Project

The study will examine the needs and opportunities for transportation improvements within the Cawthra Road corridor to:

  • Better serve the needs of all road users;
  • Maximize the use and capacity of the road right-of-way; and
  • Improve operations and safety for all road users.

A feasibility study was completed in 2014 that concluded that a widening of Cawthra Road from QEW to Eastgate Parkway is not warranted. Recommendations include maintaining the existing four lane cross-section (with centre turn-lane in some sections) with intersection improvements, and exploring opportunities to enhance active transportation by providing on-road bicycle and/or boulevard multi-use facilities. The EA study will build upon the findings of the feasibility study.

The Process

The study is being conducted in compliance with Schedule 'B' of the Municipal Class EA, which is approved under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act.

Public Consultation

Public consultation is an integral component of the Municipal Class EA process and opportunities to comment are welcomed throughout the entire study. Consultation activities will be announced at key milestones in the project. At the conclusion of the study, an EA report will be filed with the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, and made available to agencies and the public for a 30 calendar day public review period.
