Drug Coverage

Each eligible client, spouse or same-sex partner, and dependent qualifies for drug coverage for each month they receive assistance. Drug cards are issued on a month-to-month basis. Automated drug cards are attached to their monthly statement.

Changes in legislation have allowed pharmacies to charge a $2 co-payment fee to OW recipients. As a result, eligible clients may be charged this fee at the pharmacies discretion. It is their responsibility to pay this fee.

Clients who have high drug costs but are ineligible for assistance based on their income may be eligible to receive extended health benefits. They must verify the drug costs and must have been in receipt of assistance the month prior to becoming eligible for the extended health benefits.

Clients of extended health benefits are eligible for:

  • Items covered by the Ontario Drug Benefit plan.
  • Dental and vision care benefits for children
  • The cost of diabetic supplies, surgical supplies and dressings (if there is no other source of funding available), and medical transportation costs over $15
  • The consumer CO-payment for the Assistive Devices Program (ADP)
  • The cost of assessment for an assistive device if there is no other source of funding available
  • The cost of batteries and repairs for mobility devices if there is no other source of funding available

Clients who are ineligible for extended health benefits and require prescription drugs may contact the Trillium Drug Program (1-800-268-1154).
