Peel Paramedics Help with Hospital Opening
At 7 a.m. this past Sunday, Peel Regional Paramedic Services along with crews from Halton, York and Toronto lined up at the front entrance of Peel Memorial Hospital in preparation to move critical care patients from Peel Memorial to the new Brampton Civic Hospital.
The move included patients from the intensive care unit, the neonatal intensive care unit and patients requiring special care and monitoring.
“Peel Paramedics were an instrumental part of this move,” says Peter Dundas, Director of Peel Regional Paramedic Services. “Staff at the William Osler Health Centre were extremely impressed with their performance and I’d like to commend everyone involved.”
A total of 231 patients were relocated. Fifty-nine critical patients were transported by paramedics and the remainder by a private transfer service in under 7 hours.
“The great work of paramedics during the move continues to build on the solid partnerships with staff at the Brampton Civic Hospital,” says Emil Kolb, Peel Regional Chair. “That partnership is an important part of the community’s well-being.”
The provincial Central Ambulance Communications Centre oversaw the dispatch of all fifty-nine patients. On average, Peel Paramedics were able to get patients from one hospital to the other in 12 minutes and were able to drop them off within seven minutes.
The move also brought together the support services of Regional staff: Operations Support from Environment, Transportation and Planning Services, Communications and Information and Technology Services.
"The successful move reflects the high level of professionalism that paramedics show every day," says David Szwarc, Chief Administrative Officer. "Every time we go beyond expectations, our residents feel safer and we gain greater trust and confidence in the services we provide."
Thank you to all paramedics and Regional staff involved in the move.
