Preparing for Paramedics Can Save Valuable Time

Ten year old Peter Allen received a civilian citation and award plaque from Peel Regional Paramedics and Peel Regional Police on May 1, 2008 for his quick-thinking, preparedness and assistance during an emergency.

On June 1, 2007, Peel Regional Paramedics arrived on scene to find a woman suffering from scoliosis who had fallen down a flight of stairs. It was Peter, the woman’s son who called 911, worked with the 911 dispatcher to provide as much information as possible and aided paramedics by gathering all of her medication and medical information before their arrival.

“Peter’s self control was above and beyond what adults in similar situations exhibit and his preparedness for when emergency personnel arrived was exceptional,” said Andrew Orr, Peel Regional Paramedic who responded to the call with fellow Peel Regional Paramedic Barry Felsher.

How to prepare for Paramedics

In any emergency situation it’s important to stay calm, get organized and prepare for emergency services to arrive. Here are a few things that you can do to ensure you’re ready when help is on the way:

  • Move all cars from the driveway
  • Gather all patient’s medication and health card
  • Turn on the lights inside and outside the home
  • Unlock and open the door
  • Clear a path to the patient inside and outside
  • Secure pets
