Peel Region

OFFICIAL PLAN

Natural Heritage

Peel ROP policies related to natural heritage will be updated to reflect the revisions to the Provincial Policy Statement and the Greenbelt Plan.

This focus area will also include a study of significant woodlands. In order to update policy and mapping, Regional staff will work with the province, conservation authorities and other organizations to determine how their background studies (Ministry of Natural Resources’ Natural Spaces Program, Toronto Region Conservation Authority’s Terrestrial Natural Heritage System Strategy, and Credit Valley Conservation’s Terrestrial Ecosystem Enhancement Model) will be considered in the review of conformity requirements for the Peel ROP.

The Peel – Caledon Significant Woodlands and Significant Wildlife Habitat Study was undertaken to provide technical recommendations for the policy review. In order to update policy and mapping, the Region of Peel will work with the province, conservation authorities and other organizations to determine how their background studies (Ministry of Natural Resources’ Natural Spaces Program, Toronto Region Conservation Authority’s Terrestrial Natural Heritage System Strategy and Credit Valley Conservation’s Terrestrial Ecosystem Enhancement Model) will be considered in the review of conformity requirements for the Peel ROP.

The Natural Heritage Policy Review Discussion Paper provides an overview of the trends in natural heritage planning and the current policy environment in Ontario and Peel. The paper identifies policy and mapping gaps for various natural heritage features and outlines preliminary recommended policy options for significant valleylands, significant woodlands, significant wildlife habitat and Greenbelt Conformity (related to natural heritage). Greenlands management topics are discussed including greenlands securement and ecological goods and services as well as a proposed work plan to prepare a Greenlands Strategy for the Region of Peel.

We welcome your feedback, and encourage you to read Peel – Caledon Significant Woodlands and Significant Wildlife Habitat Study and Natural Heritage Policy Review Discussion Paper and share your thoughts and ideas – all of which will be taken into consideration as the Region continues to review and update its Official Plan.
