Canadian Council on Social Development – Community Data Program

The Community Data Program (CDP) was established in the mid-1990s as a gateway for municipalities and community based organizations to access data from Statistics Canada and other institutions in order to identify and better understand the social and economic trends within their individual communities.

The CDP helps municipalities and community sector organizations:

  • monitor and report on community-level trends and program/policy outcomes
  • acquire data corresponding to unique community-level boundaries
  • reduce community data acquisition costs
  • invest in “community data literacy” and organizational capacity to use data
  • advocate for a national community data strategy

A Community Data Consortium is a group of organizations focused on the implementation of a public service goal and are established at the community level. Consortiums come together to acquire data and also functions as a Community Development Entity.

On October 17, 2012, Peel Data Centre staff hosted a webinar providing potential new members of Peel’s Consortium information on the CDP. The purpose of the webinar was to:

  • introduce the Community Data Program (CDP)
  • discuss Peel’s Local Consortium
  • provide tutorial of CDP data catalogue and tools
  • provide examples of how data is being used
  • provide an overview of membership

The webinar is provided in two formats:
