  • Indicator 1.1 The area of land in Peel owned by conservation authorities amounts to 4,889 ha representing 4% of the total land area of Peel.
    Indicator 2.1 The total area of wetlands in Peel Region declined almost 2,000 hectares or 37% between 1982 and 1998.
    Indicator 2.2 3 unevaluated wetlands were evaluated and added to the inventory of Peel Region wetlands. This added approximately 18 ha to the total area of wetlands in Peel.
    Indicator 2.3 Woodland areas presently cover 17,976 ha in Peel, representing almost 15 % of the total land area of the Region.
    Indicator 2.4 Less than 4,000 ha of forest interior woodland (100 m. buffer) remains in Peel, representing 22% of the total woodland area of the Region. The ratio of woodland area to perimeter is 7:1 in Peel.
    Indicator 2.5 Almost 77% of woodlands in Peel are situated surrounding or adjacent to wetland areas.
    Indicator 2.6 The total area of ESAs in Peel is 7,971 hectares. This represents 6.5% of the total land area of Peel, compared to 5.4% when the ESAs were originally identified.
    Indicator 2.7 The MNR has currently identified 33 Areas of Natural & Scientific Interest in Peel Region. 14 of these ANSIs have been evaluated as provincially significant.
    Indicator 4.1 The average population density of Peel Region in 1996 was 2,126 people per square kilometre. The average population density of residential areas was 3,400 people per square kilometre in 1996.
    Indicator 4.2 The ratio of spills per 1,000 population increased from 0.26 spills per thousand in 1991 to 0.39 spills per thousand in 1996.
    Indicator 4.3 The average proportion of spills over the 1990-97 period with a confirmed or possible environmental impact was 60.2 percent.
    Indicator 4.4 In 1997, the KMS Peel incinerator provided 50 million kilowatt hours of energy from waste to energy users in Peel. This represented 85 percent of its total energy production.
    Indicator 4.5 The per capita reduction in solid waste going to landfill since 1987 improved from -20.3% in 1990 to -34.0% in 1997.
    Indicator 4.6 The average waste generated per person per year in Peel dropped from 340 to 295 kilograms, during the 1991-96 period.
    Indicator 5.1 The area of cropland in Peel declined 5.9% during the 1986 -96 period. This compares to a 7.3% decline in total farm area for the same period.
    Indicator 5.2 Over the last two years in the Town of Caledon, 19 severances have been granted that resulted in the conversion of 37.8 acres of agricultural land to non-agricultural use.
    Indicator 5.3 The rural farm population as a proportion of total rural population in Peel has declined from 5.7% in 1981 to 2.7% in 1991.
    Indicator 5.4 The area of farmland using herbicides represented 37.8% of total farm area in the 1995, compared to an average of 35.9% for the 1986-95 period. The area of farmland using insecticides and fungicides represented 11.4% of total farm area in 1995, compared to an average of 9.8% for the 1986-95 period.
    Indicator 5.5 Nearly 200 farm families participated in Environmental Farm Plan program workshops in Peel Region during the 1993-97 period.
    Indicator 5.6 The amount of licensed extraction area in Peel Region that was disturbed for extraction declined 2.7 % over the 1987-97 period.
    Indicator 5.7 Of the area of land in Peel disturbed for the purposes of aggregate extraction, 11.4 % underwent progressive rehabilitation in 1997.
