What is the Long Range Transportation
Plan?
The Peel Region Long Range Transportation
Plan (LRTP) was initiated in late 2002 as part of the
Regional Official Plan Strategic Update (ROPSU). This
study identified and addressed transportation challenges
anticipated by the Region over the next 20-30 years,
and developed appropriate policies, strategies and a
road improvement plan to address these challenges. This
report also provides an overall vision and framework
to allow coordination of actions by all levels of government
as well as the private sector in addressing transportation
challenges in Peel.
The LRTP includes five major studies:
Each of the above projects
included research, analysis, study of best practices
and consultation with stakeholders. The findings of
the first four studies above, as well as several previous
Regional and area municipal transportation planning
studies, were used in developing the Long Range Transportation
Plan. Major components include:
- Regional road network
plan, i.e. Regional road improvements required by
2011, 2021 and 2031;
- Transportation Vision,
Goals, Objectives and Policies, which provide a framework
for developing and coordinating future actions and
programs to improve transportation in Peel; and
- A list of provincial
highway and GO Transit improvements to meet future
Regional needs.
The LRTP forms the basis
for Regional
Official Plan Amendment 16 (ROPA 16) which amends
the Regional Official Plan objectives, policies, Schedule
E (Major Street Network), Schedule F (Right-of-way Requirements)
and Schedule G (High Order Transit Network).
Long Range Transportation Plan Update (2011)
In 2010, the Region of Peel initiated an update to the Long Range Transportation Plan 2005.
This update:
- Ensures that transportation planning decisions are made within the context of changes in provincial legislation and general transportation and land use trends.
- Serves as input to other studies, including Environmental Assessments.
- Supports transportation policies in the Regional Official Plan.
