Cordon Count Program
The Cordon Count Program
involves the counting of vehicles and people that cross
selected counting stations which are strategically located
at major crossings, such as roads or rail lines, creating
screenlines or cordons. The traffic data is collected
in 15 minute intervals over a specified time period.
Similar programs are conducted in other regions in the
GTA.
The objective of the Program is to collect
consistent and comprehensive regional daily vehicle
and person movement data in order to monitor travel
pattern changes and to assist in the planning of the
transportation system in Peel. The data provides
a valuable information source to estimate future vehicle
(passenger and truck) and transit trends.
The Region
of Peel Travel Demand Forecasting Model uses the
Cordon Count data for the validation process. The data
is used as input into the Capital Roads Program, phasing
of development in the Region and for the following:
- Auto occupancy information in support of High Occupancy
Vehicle and carpooling initiatives
- Degree of usage of public transit and automobile
modes
- Monitoring growth and impacts on road and transit
facilities of various new developments
- Nature and degree of commercial vehicle transport
Area Municipalities, the Ministry of Transportation Ontario
and consultants also use Cordon Count data for analysis
in transportation studies and the monitoring of growth.
