Transportation Tomorrow Survey
The Regional Municipality of Peel, the Province of
Ontario, 15 other municipalities in Southern Ontario,
Go Transit and TTC conducted a comprehensive survey
of travel patterns called the Transportation Tomorrow
Survey (TTS) in Fall 2001. The purpose of the survey
was to collect information on the travel choices and
preferences of the residents in the area and to provide
a database for long-range planning, calibration of travel
demand forecasting models and consequent improvements
of transportation facilities.
In this survey, randomly selected households received
a letter informing the residents that they will be telephoned
by a professional interviewer and asked to spend about
10 minutes answering the survey questions. A sample
of questions that were asked is shown below. The survey
questions focussed on travel on the weekday before the
call and for those members of household who are over
11 years old. The interviewer asked specific questions
about where, when and how trips were taken by each member
of the household.
Survey Questions:
A. About the household
- Type of building (house or apartment)
- Number of people
- Number of vehicles available for personal use
B. About each person ·
- Their age
- Do they have a driver's license?
- Where do they work or go to school (street address)
C. About each trip made by each person the previous
day ·
- From where, to where (street address preferred,
building name)
- Reason for making the trip (e.g. shopping)
- Start time of the trip
- Mode of transportation (bus, car, bicycle, etc.)
The trip data was collected for persons 11 years of
age or older. A trip was one way journey from one location
to another by any form of motorized transport, bicycle
or walk. The information on walking was collected only
for trips to and from work or school.
The dramatic growth in traffic, throughout the GTA
and beyond, in the last two decades has prompted planners
to examine the travel trends in greater detail. Combined
with the census data, the survey results allow analysis
of travel patterns and trends for the GTA and beyond.
The survey interviewed approximately 120,000 randomly
selected families.
The 2001 Survey had been designed to further update
the previous surveys undertaken in 1986, 1991 and 1996.
Like the 1996 Survey, it gathered travel information
from areas external to the GTA. This will provide the
second TTS snapshot of travel in the external areas
and start to create a transportation database similar
to the GTA that can be used for time series analysis,
including projections of travel needs. The TTS Survey
was timed to coincide with the Canadian Census so that
general relationships can be made regarding transportation
and household characteristics.
The next TTS survey is scheduled to be conducted in
2006 in the GTA and other participating regions. For
further information visit the University
of Toronto's Data Management Group TTS website
