Emergency Management Program Standards:
As outlined in the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, each municipality in Ontario must have not only an Emergency Management Program, but also an Emergency Plan.
Emergency Management Ontario (EMO) is the Provincial agency responsible for emergency management in Ontario. They assist municipalities in meeting the standards of the Emergency Management Program.
The Program is based on four components of emergency management: Mitigation/Prevention, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery.
While there are set timelines and guidelines for municipalities to comply with the Emergency Management Act, each community in Ontario must meet the Essential Level of the Emergency Management Program Standards by December 31, 2005. The Region has met the Essential Level and is continuously striving to improve emergency management for Peel residents and businesses.
The Emergency Management Program in place at the
Region of Peel already meets or exceeds the Essential
Level requirements.
These Essential Level requirements include:
- Designating a Community Emergency Management Coordinator (CEMC).
- Forming an Emergency Management Program Committee.
- Printing and distributing an approved Emergency Response Plan.
- Establishing an appropriate Emergency Operations Centre.
- Identifying critical infrastructures.
- Conducting annual training for the Community Control Group and Emergency Operations Centre staff.
- Conducting an annual exercise to evaluate the Emergency Response Plan.
- Identifying individuals to act as Emergency Information Staff.
- Developing and implementing an Emergency Management Public Awareness Program
- Reviewing and updating the Emergency Management Program annually.
