About Peel EcoFair

Water is connected with all other things; what we do on the land is reflected in the water.

One of the Region of Peel’s goals in its Strategic Plan is to, “Preserve, protect and enhance Peel’s natural and environmental resources.” Peel EcoFair promotes this goal by encouraging environmental action projects being undertaken locally by students in Peel schools.

Student groups from across Peel, ranging from Grades 4 through post-secondary, gather together at Peel EcoFair in order to network, communicate, and celebrate their action projects.

Presentations and Displays

Students at Peel EcoFair present their projects directly to their peers at a one day gathering.

Another intention of the Peel EcoFair is to inspire other schools to explore and act upon environmental concerns in their own school community. Project presentations and displays describe the goals, planning, challenges, partnerships, curricular relevance and lessons learned. Each environmental action project will make links to the sustainability of Peel’s numerous watersheds.

What is a Watershed?

Like a basin, a watershed is the area of land where all water running off the land drains to a particular location, like a stream, river, lake, wetland or ocean. No matter where you live, work or play you are always in a watershed. Of the 24 watersheds in Peel, 22 drain into Lake Ontario, the source of drinking water for more than one million Peel residents.

Presentation submissions for Peel EcoFair are accepted throughout the school year. The action projects and presentations come in all forms: visual art, poetry, video, song, drama, spoken and written word. These are just some of the outlets used by students to creatively present their amazing work.

To date, some of the project presentations from students have included, but are not limited to:

  • Water quality monitoring
  • School yard naturalization
  • Recycling
  • Water efficiency auditing
  • Air quality monitoring
  • Landfill diversion
  • Pesticide-free gardening
  • Environmental Drama
  • Idle Free Zones at School
  • Composting

Project Feedback Team

Key to Peel EcoFair’s educational value and the longevity of school projects is the one-on-one feedback that students and teachers receive from professionals with expertise in the project’s field. Following the morning’s presentations, students are engaged in dialogue about their project. The expert provides each group with constructive feedback about the project itself and its application to real world issues, as well as the students’ display and presentation style.

"Hands-on projects help students and others to understand their connection and relationship with the natural environment so they can make better choices about the way they live within the environment."
Commissioner of Environment, Transportation and Planning Services, Mitch Zamojc
