Pedestrian Crossing
Approach the Intersection
Pushing the pedestrian pushbutton on the traffic signal pole extends the green time of the traffic signals, giving the pedestrian enough time to cross the street.
Pedestrians will only have enough time to cross if they begin their crossing on a "Walk" indication. If the pedestrian button is not pushed, the "Walk" signal will not appear. A solid "Don't Walk" indication will appear and only the minimum vehicle green time will be provided. This is not enough time for a pedestrian to cross the street!
Crossing the Street
Once the pedestrian button is pushed, the "Walk" signal will appear during the next traffic signal cycle.
The flashing "Don't Walk" hand display will follow. The combination of the "Walk" and "Flashing Don't Walk" will allow pedestrians who have already started to cross enough time to complete their crossing safely. Pedestrians who have not started to cross must push the button and wait for the "Walk" signal during the next cycle.
Side Streets
At locations that do not provide pedestrian pushbuttons, the "Walk", flashing "Don't Walk" and solid "Don't Walk" symbols will automatically come up and will provide enough time for the pedestrian to safely cross the street.
Advance Green Traffic Signals
Do not cross during the advance green signal! Push the pedestrian push button and wait for the "Walk" signal to appear.
Touchless Pushbuttons

The Region of Peel is currently testing several new types of pedestrian pushbuttons, including a touchless (infared) type. A pedestrian call will be provided if an object gets within approximately 15 cm (6 inches) of the pushbutton.
A test site for this pushbutton can be found at the intersection of Dixie Road and Lisa Street. Other test sites with different types of pushbuttons are located at:
- Steeles Avenue and Kennedy Road
- Dixie Road and Clark Boulevard
- Kennedy Road and Queen Street
- Dixie Road and Queen Street
Countdown Pedestrian Signal Heads
The Region of Peel has commenced a pilot program using "countdown" pedestrian signals that display the actual time given to complete pedestrian crossings. These pedestrian countdown signals are currently installed at:
- Steeles Avenue and Kennedy Road
- Queen Street and Kennedy Road
- Queen Street and Laurelcrest Street/West Drive
- Erin Mills Parkway and Folkway Drive
- Kennedy Road and Centennial Mall
- Kennedy Road and Vodden Street
