Create a Winter Emergency Kit
Are you and your car prepared for the winter? It's a good idea to keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle. Having essential supplies can provide some comfort and safety for you and your passengers should you become stranded.
Recommended items for a winter emergency kit include:
- Flashlight and batteries
- Extra clothing and footwear
- Candle and a small tin can
- Non-perishable energy foods (chocolate/granola bars/juice/soup/bottled water)
- First aid kit
- Blankets
- Matches
Here are some maintenance recommendations and items to keep in your vehicle during the winter months:
- Keep your gas tank at least half full in cold weather
- Ice scraper/snow brush
- Shovel
- Fire extinguisher
- Small tool kit
- Sand or other traction aid
- Tow rope or chain
- Booster cables
- Road flares or warning lights
- Gas line antifreeze
- Completely clear your vehicle of snow and ice, including the windows, mirrors, roof, trunk, hood and lights
- Monitor tire wear and pressure to prevent leaks, flats or poor driveability
- Clean your vehicle's battery terminals and check for leaks and wear
- Start your block heater several hours before driving
- Warm up your car for a minimum one minute before you drive
- Drive slowly while engine components warm up
- Check windshield wipers for wear and refill washer fluid often
- Maintain proper coolant system levels
