Services: Reducing Salt Usage

  • Reduced application rates for salt from 200kg to 130kg per 2 lane km on multi-lane roads and can go as low as 65kg per 2 lane km for two-lane roads, as conditions dictate.
  • Electronically monitor and log rates with fully automated electronic spreader controls/data loggers and correct deviances accordingly.
  • When the use of sand is required for traction, the Region has reduced the salt-to-sand ratio from 30 per cent salt, 70 per cent sand to 12 per cent salt, 88 per cent sand. Furthermore, our application rate for sand has been reduced from 450 kg to 350 kg per 2 lane km on multi-lane roads and can go as low as 250 kg per 2 lane km for two-lane roads, as conditions dictate.
  • On board pre-wetting is the practice of applying liquid de-icing agents such as salt brine, Magnesium Chloride, or Calcium Chloride onto the dry rock salt. This method is more effective than the application of dry salt and results in the use of less material to maintain the Region of Peel's bare pavement policy.
  • Pre-wetting of salt stock piles with liquid de-icing agents such as Magnesium Chloride or Calcium Chloride is an alternate practice utilized to improve the melting ability of the salt.
  • Anti-icing is the practice of applying a chemical freezing point depressant on pavement prior to the start of freezing precipitation. This prevents the bonding between snow and ice to the road surface.

The Region of Peel is an active participant on the Ontario Road Salt Management Committee, which is comprised of major road authorities throughout Ontario. The committee's mandate is efficient and effective salt management best practices.

The Region of Peel will continue to provide the safest and most cost-effective methods possible for maintaining Regional roads.
