Answers
Why was my area selected for the Demonstration Project?
Three separate areas within the Region of Peel have been selected to participate in the Peel Organics Demonstration Project. These areas were selected based on their mixture of housing types and age of neighbourhoods. back to top
How will the Demonstration Project affect my waste collection schedule?
Organics, garbage and recycling will be collected each week in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga. back to top
Do I have to participate in this Demonstration Project?
Regional Council, as a way of reducing the amount of waste going to landfill, has endorsed the Peel Organics Demonstration Project. As organic material is the portion of the waste stream that creates odours, participation is strongly encouraged. If residents do not wish to participate in the Peel Organics Demonstration Project they must still follow the collection schedule. back to top
How often will my organics container be collected?
Your organics container will be collected every week on your regular collection day. back to top
What materials can be included in my organics container?
The organics curbside collection container is used to hold organic material outside your house. Please refer to your Peel Organics Demonstration Project Brochure for a complete list of acceptable organic materials. back to top
Can I use my organics curbside collection container for yard waste?
If you find that there is room in your curbside collection container at the end of the week, yard waste can be used to fill up your organics container. Large amounts of yard waste and bulky yard waste (i.e. brush, tree trimmings, etc) will be collected during the spring and fall seasons only. Please refer to the Peel Organics Demonstration Project Calendar for dates. back to top
Does the Peel Organics Demonstration Project replace my backyard composter?
No. The Peel Organics Demonstration Project complements your backyard composter. The demonstration project accepts organic materials that should not be added to your backyard composter; for example, meat, bones, dairy products, lint, and popcorn bags. back to top
How are meats, bones, dairy products and other organics material composted?
All organic waste collected in the demonstration project will be taken to the Peel Composting Facility for processing. This facility uses a specially designed enclosed technology to break down organic waste and produce finished compost. back to top
What happens if I put non-organic material out for collection in my organics curbside collection container?
If organic waste is contaminated with items such as recyclables or garbage, your organics curbside collection container will not be collected and you will be responsible for removing the contaminants. These materials contaminate the final compost and reduce its usage. back to top
What do I do with animal waste?
Animal waste is considered garbage and is not accepted in the organics container. Please double-bag all animal waste in grocery bags and place it within your regular garbage bag. back to top
What should I do with diapers?
We are currently trying to identify reliable markets for material recycled from diapers. This means that although technology may exist for the recycling of diaper material, without a market, these materials end up in the landfill. Please place your diapers with your garbage.back to top
