The Composting Process
1. Organic material is gathered at home and placed at curb for collection
2. Organic material arrives at the regional composting facilities and is shredded
When the organic material arrives at the site, the truck is weighed and directed to the processing building where the truck empties the load onto the floor. In the processing building, the material is visually inspected for contamination and then loaded into the shredder.
The shredder cuts the material into smaller pieces that are then placed inside the composting units.
3. Shredded material is loaded into composting vessel
The actual composting process takes place in a biocell, a reinforced concrete box with a 60 cubic metre (78.5 cubic yards) capacity. Air is circulated through the box using a series of holes within the floor. Seepage water collected on the floor is rained back into the container from the ceiling.
4. Material is transferred to the curing pad, where it is piled into windrows for curing
After approximately seven to ten days, the material is removed from the biocell. The material is sorted outside for a curing period of 30-45 days.
5. Cured compost is screened for size and quality and then prepared for market
Finished compost is screened through a half-inch wire screen to complete the process.
6. Our compost is available for your lawn and/or garden
Our finished compost is available for sale at our Community Recycling Centres.
