Peel Composting Facility

The Regional composting facilities for organics, food and yard waste are located at the Peel Integrated Waste Management Facility and the Caledon Public Waste and Recycling Depot. The program does not replace backyard composting, but enhances it by allowing residents to compost materials Herhof Biocells that can't be put in their backyard composter.

Organic material is composted in large containers called Herhof Bio-cells.

First Steps

When the organic material arrives at the site, the truck isShredder weighed and directed to the processing building where the truck empties the load onto the floor. In the processing building, the material is visually inspected for contamination and then loaded into the shredder. The shredder cuts the material into smaller pieces and once completed, the material is placed inside the composting units.

Composting Process

The actual composting process takes place in a biocell, a reinforced concrete box with a 60 cubic metre capacity. Air is circulated through the box using a series of holes within the floor. Seepage water collected on the floor is rained back into the container from the ceiling.

After approximately seven to ten Final step in composting processdays, the material is removed from the biocell. The material is sorted outside for a curing period of 30-45 days. Finished compost is screened through a half inch wire screen to complete the process.

The finished compost is available for sale at the Region's Community Recycling Centres.
