Using Compost

Benefits of Composting

Why Should We Compost?

When we compost, we reduce waste in our landfills and help our environment.

Composting Reduces Waste
The more kitchen and yard waste we compost, the less waste goes into our landfills. Less waste means smaller landfills and less landfill maintenance.

Composting Helps Our Environment
Composting helps our environment by improving the soil in our gardens and lawns.

Quality compost:

  • adds and holds nutrients in the root zone
  • breaks up heavy soils (high clay), allowing better infiltration of air and water in the root zone
  • enables light soil to retain nutrients and moisture
  • helps make almost all plants healthier
  • improves soil structure
  • makes most soils more workable for replanting and weeding
  • encourages earthworm activity

Composting can dramatically reduce the dependence on landfilling.

Composting is considered a part of an integrated solid waste management strategy.
