Waste Management

2012/2013 Waste Management Guide

ReTHINK Waste

It’s time to reTHINK waste. This is the challenge we give to all Peel residents as we work together to reduce the amount of waste we produce and reduce our collective carbon footprint. Changing how we think about waste, by becoming educated consumers and considering the entire lifecycle of a product from manufacturing - to use - to disposal, are the first steps towards minimizing our waste. Less waste means less disposal and that’s good news for the environment!

Reduce

Reducing waste saves money, cuts pollution and conserves resources (raw materials and energy) that are used to manufacture new products. Waste reduction means being aware of the affect the product and its packaging has on the environment.

Reuse

Reusing items saves money, energy and resources. Adopt ‘reduce and reuse’ behaviours and consider:

r echargeable instead of disposable batteries
e liminating the purchase of disposable products
T aking a litterless lunch
H olding a garage sale
I nvestigating the purchase of used goods over new items
N oticing the materials used in packaging to avoid
over-packaged products
K nowing what items go in your blue box and green bin
