Waste Management

Collection Day Checklist

  • Make sure that your curbside waste (garbage cans and bags, recycling boxes, yard waste and organic carts) weigh less than 20 kg (44 lbs).
  • Place your garbage and recyclable material (Blue Box, organics and yard waste) at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day, but but no earlier than 7 p.m. the night before.
  • Place your recyclable material (Blue Box, organics and yard waste) on one side of the driveway and garbage on the opposite side, if possible.
  • Keep your waste separate from your neighbour's.
  • Prior to collection, remove any items used to keep container lids in place (e.g. bungee cords).
  • Pet waste must be double-bagged and cannot exceed 10 per cent of the volume of the garbage bag or container's capacity.
  • Empty containers or waste not collected must be removed from the curb by 8 p.m. on your collection day.
  • Keep a safe distance from collection trucks to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Broken glass is a hazard and can injure you and the collector. Place it inside rigid containers.
  • Make sure your collector has a clear view of and easy access to your waste and recyclable material. If possible, avoid parking your car in front of your waste placed at the curb for collection.
  • Do not put renovation and construction materials at the curb. Call Public Works for recycling and disposal options.
  • Place yard waste in open, rigid containers or paper bags so that the yard waste collector can identify it for collection.
  • Clear the way for your collection truck. Don't leave hockey nets and basketball posts in the street on your waste collection day.
  • For safety reasons, do not include hazardous waste (i.e. paint, propane cylinders or motor oil) with your garbage.
