Waste Management

Saving the Environment

After Recycling

  • Energy-from-Waste (EFW)
Steam captured from the EFW process is delivered to a nearby paper mill. All of the steam required by the paper mill is supplied by Algonquin Power.

Peel converts a portion of its garbage into energy at the Algonquin Power EFW facility. The facility, located in Brampton, processes approximately half of our residential garbage (approximately 130,000 tonnes). The other half is sent to landfill.

With limited landfill space in Ontario, EFW provides an effective and environmentally responsible solution to managing the Region’s garbage, while at the same time generating energy. When EFW is included in the Region’s waste diversion calculations, we are diverting 70 per cent of waste from landfill.
