Innovation in Action

The Region of Peel, in partnership with the City of Mississauga, converted the former Britannia Landfill Site into BraeBen Golf Course, a championship course. As the golf course was developed, the Region of Peel installed a landfill gas recovery system in partnership with Integrated Gas Recovery Services Limited.

A series of collection wells located on the course are used to capture landfill gas, which is piped to a nearby gas-to-electricity facility and converted to green electricity. The electricity is sold at a premium "green power" rate to the Province of Ontario, and the Region receives a share of the revenue.

The landfill gas-to-electricity facility generates approximately 5.5 megawatts of power. This represents enough green electricity to power 5,500 homes on a daily basis for the next 20 years.
