The Region of Peel’s Drinking Water Quality Management Standard Policy
The Regional Municipality of Peel is committed to supplying safe and clean drinking water that meets all applicable legislative and regulatory requirements to the consumer, and is committed to the maintenance and continual improvement of the Quality Management System (QMS).
A new regulation
Ontario has a new regulation on how the Region of Peel (the municipal operating authority) approaches the management and operation of our drinking water systems. The Ministry of the Environment’s (MOE) intent is to ensure a culture of commitment to quality, diligence and dedication to consumers in providing drinking water.
The MOE developed a Drinking Water Quality Management Standard (DWQMS) to help achieve this goal.
Why the change?
The Walkerton Inquiry Report speaks to the need to create standards of operation and customer service in addition to complying with regulations in the delivery of municipal drinking water. The Ontario government is committed to fulfilling all of the recommendations resulting from the Walkerton Inquiry.
What is Peel going to do to meet the new requirements?
Peel is developing an operational plan that will outline how Peel manages its systems (the policies and procedures) and put into place processes to continuously check and make improvements.
Important dates
The entire project is expected to take approximately two and a half years to complete. The Region must submit the first portion (the written documentation and applications) to the MOE by January 1, 2009.
